Research in the Farrell lab focuses on the biological roles of carbohydrates. Specifically, we investigate the roles of carbohydrate-protein interactions that: (i) play key roles in modulating the immune system; (ii) facilitate disease development and progression; and (iii) permit the production and degradation of oligo- and polysaccharides. We engage in the design and synthesis of molecules, both small and large, in order to explore and understand these interactions. We endeavor to validate the importance of specific carbohydrate-protein interactions in each of these areas and seek to utilize the ensuing knowledge to design and develop novel therapeutic strategies.
